To be totally honest I kind of enjoyed Barack’s speech last night. Even though I disagreed with most of what was said, it was nice to go a whole speech without cringing or being pandered to. Politicians generally just speak down to us, that’s just how things are, but Mr. Obama doesn’t seem to be quite as bad as some (ahem, John Kerry).
Rush Limbaugh was wrong. When the President is successful, the nation is successful. I hope that Barack Obama succeeds in improving America’s image around the world, strengthening our national security, bringing home the troops from Iraq, and bringing our country out of this recession. I pray for our President every day and I wish him the best.
The whole “hope and change” thing is starting to come together but I think it still needs some work. I think some of the problem might be that Mr. Obama and I define those words differently. First, “hope” means that we have a positive outlook on the future.
- It means that we don’t have to worry about how the heck our kids are going to pay for some social program that the Democrats decided should be part of a “stimulus package”.
- It also means I shouldn’t have to be concerned that if I work hard and build a successful business that I might have the crap taxed out of me as soon as things start to get going.
- I shouldn’t be at the mercy of some apathetic bureaucrat who will determine the nature and quality of my health care (I guess you could say I’m pro-choice).
- I shouldn’t have to be concerned that my President is going to endanger my livelihood by taxing the small business that I work for.
- I definitely shouldn’t worry that my elected officials who aren’t democrats might be completely cut out of the legislative process as mysterious legislation is passed hours after it is written despite the fact that few members of congress have even read the bill.
But with less than 2 months of Barack’s Presidency in the past, I should be worried about all of these things. I’m worried that big businesses aren’t allowed to fail while small businesses aren’t allowed to succeed. I’m basically developing an anxiety disorder while Mr. Hope and Change makes pretty speeches!!
Change, at least to me, means a movement from a previous condition to a new one. Obama didn’t just promise change in the ruling party in Washington. Obama promised change in the way that Washington was run. Most of Obama’s appointees served in the Clinton administration. Is there group that represents the classic methods and ideals of the Democratic party more than the Clinton administration? Pushing massive spending bills through Congress twice a week all while preaching about taxing the rich and giving to the poor is not new! Nothing about Obama’s policies so far is in any way new. This is the same old mantra of bigger government, more regulation, more government control, and more spending that the Democrats have been pushing since FDR.
I actually agree with Obama about quite a few of his foreign policies. More on this is coming soon.
So the whole “Hope and Change” thing isn’t going to work out. What did any of us expect? Were we really naive enough to think that Washington elites would support someone for president that would take away their power? The American people have been duped. Hopefully we will wake up and smell the scam before it is too late. Now that would be change I could believe in.
I agree, and I’m glad you brought up FDR. It seems to me all of his programs to create new jobs worked well enough, (while it was the war which really reinvigorated our nation.) But all of this government control and spending money we don’t really have has got to go. And that’s what he said. He acted like he was gonna change the way Washington works, and he hasn’t. Personally, while I’m learning about deficit spending, it seems to me the entire concept of “money we don’t have but we’re going to spend it anyway” is retarded. We should stop giving our money to people who are just going to bolster a failing system. It’s like the talents. Why should I give you money if you’re going to go out there and lose it? I say we keep our money in shoeboxes and watch Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac go bankrupt. I don’t know the logistics of it all, but just from the surface, the banking system seems destined to bring the whole world down with it. Obama gives hope, but he is changing anything. We need someone who’ll change this before it gets any worse
